Philip J Morris

Artistic Director

Who I Am…

Hey everyone! I’m Philip J Morris, the Artistic Director at Trybe House Theatre and a practitioner and grime historian. My journey in the world of theatre began with the support of an exceptional drama teacher during my time in sixth form. This led me to pursue Applied Theatre at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, where I earned my (BA HONS) degree. Throughout my studies, I delved into the rich history of theatre and its profound social impact. With experience in acting, playwriting, facilitation, and devising, I harboured a strong ambition to establish a theatre company.

My professional path commenced at The Rep, where I started as a postgraduate intern in learning and participation. During this time, I was approached to lead a pilot project called Up My Street, funded by MIND Charity, aimed at supporting young black men at risk of mental health issues. The project evolved into the successful independent entity named Lightpost. I then served as a Youth Theatre Director and later as a Senior Youth Theatre Director overseeing all activities of the Young Rep.

Afterward, I returned to London and took on the role of Project Associate at the National Theatre. Subsequently, I participated in an RTYDS Directing Course at the Young Vic and worked as a Trainee Director at the Royal Court Theatre. Towards the end of my tenure there, I conceived the idea of founding Trybe House Theatre, focusing on working with young black men.

I’ve had the privilege of directing work for esteemed theatres such as the Royal Shakespeare Company, Residenz Theatre (Munich), Young Vic, Bush Theatre, Soho Theatre, Southbank Centre, New Diorama Theatre, The Rep, and Talawa. Nothing brings me greater joy than bringing stories to life and providing moments of escapism for families, friends, and loved ones.
