Before I Go

A play that began as a monologue in our earliest programme

Before I Go, produced by Brixton House in collaboration with Trybe House Theatre, is a powerful example of the long-term journey of artists developed through the company. The production ran for three weeks and was directed by Trybe House Theatre’s Artistic Director in July 2024.

Written by Tobi King-Bakare, one of Trybe House Theatre’s original members, the play began as a monologue first developed during the company’s earliest programme. From that starting point, Tobi went on to expand the work into a full production, building on the foundations of that initial piece.

For this iteration, Tobi invited Trybe House Theatre to be part of the process, reflecting the ongoing relationship between the artist and the company. Trybe House Theatre auditioned members for the role of Ajani, the protagonist, with Christopher Mbaki, a Trybe House Theatre member, cast in the role. The production featured dual casting, with Christopher Mbaki and Tobi King-Bakare alternating performances across the run.

The production incorporated live music and poetry throughout, with musicians including a saxophonist and a drummer, adding another layer to the storytelling and atmosphere of the piece.

The play was met with strong critical and audience response, and both Tobi King-Bakare and Christopher Mbaki received nominations at the Black British Theatre Awards for Best Playwright and Best Actor.

Before I Go stands as a clear example of Trybe House Theatre’s commitment to long-term artist development, supporting individuals from their first creative ideas through to professional, recognised work on major stages.
