Building Something Real: Philip on Founding THT

Trybe House Theatre didn’t start with a business plan. It started with a vision for what could exist: a space where young Black men could be creative, be vulnerable and be heard.

When I began in the industry, I felt there weren’t many spaces where young Black men could show up fully and express themselves, especially in the early part of my career. Trybe House Theatre came from that realisation, not as a finished idea, but as something that needed to exist.

Since then, seeing members who have come through the programme go on to create their own work has been incredible, with many stepping into leadership within their own communities and others starting their own companies. It’s everything we hoped for, and more, when we first started.

We had no idea what this would become as an organisation, but we had an unwavering belief that it could make a real impact, both in the lives of the young men we work with and across the wider theatre landscape.
