The Trybe

The collective of young men we work with at Trybe House Theatre. Two routes in: Trybe Network (community, masterclasses, shared experiences) and Trybe Core (deeper engagement, focused on making work).

The Trybe is the collective of young men we work with at Trybe House Theatre.

We support members through two forms of engagement: Trybe Network and Trybe Core. The Trybe Network is about being part of the community, staying connected, and engaging with the wider Trybe through masterclasses, events, and shared experiences such as attending theatre together.

Trybe Core is for those looking for a deeper level of engagement, focused on making work. This includes developing productions, R&D, and creating performances, alongside further creative and professional opportunities.

Together, they offer different ways to be part of Trybe, whether through connection and community or through actively creating and developing work.

Our intent

Aims

  • Build confidence, self-expression and emotional resilience through creative practice
  • Develop transferable skills in collaboration, communication and leadership
  • Create a safe, consistent space for young Black men to explore identity and aspiration
  • Provide a pathway into further creative opportunities, including productions and professional development

The experience

What to expect

A typical session begins with a wellbeing check-in and warm-up, followed by a creative workshop led by a professional practitioner. Sessions might involve devising new material, exploring published texts, movement and physical theatre, spoken word, or design and tech skills.

Lunch is provided and the afternoon often focuses on ensemble work, building towards a sharing or performance at the end of each cycle.

What you'll leave with

Outcomes

  • Increased confidence and self-efficacy (measured via participant self-assessment)
  • Improved communication and teamwork skills
  • A performance sharing at the end of each cycle
  • Progression routes into THT productions, mentoring roles, and partner opportunities

Voices

In their own words

Before THT, I didn't have a place where I felt I belonged. The Trybe gave me that. It's not just about theatre, it's about being part of something real, with people who actually care.

Marcus · Current Trybe Member

Two weeks changed everything. I walked in barely able to look anyone in the eye. By the sharing, I was performing for 200 people. THT didn't just teach me to act, they taught me to trust myself.

Young men can self-refer or be referred by a professional (youth worker, teacher, social worker). No prior experience in theatre is needed. We welcome participants from all backgrounds and actively reach out to those who may face barriers to accessing arts provision.
